Michal Staniszewski is the National Team Head Coach based in Ottawa, the site of the Regional Development Coaching Centre.(RDC). If a slalom whitewater competitor is carded or top qualifying boat at National Team Trials, they can submit their notice to be included in his coaching program. This privilege lasts until the next National Team Trials.(May 29-31, 2009).
Michal arrived in Ottawa fresh from winning a silver medal in the C2 slalom class at the Olympics in Sydney, Australia, 2000. He immediately set to work inspiring young paddlers to take up the sport at the Pumphouse in Ottawa, which at that time was a little known location hidden by trees and bushes in LeBreton Flats. He and the ORR have managed to work around a long 3 and a half year shutdown of the Pumphouse site to help set up renewed training activity at the tailrace. Over time, Michal has also worked to achieve higher Coaching certification levels and expanded his teaching to higher level paddlers across the country, some of which are those he first inspired here in Ottawa.
